Welcome to Monsters of Music, a new ten part podcast series on BBC Sounds which delves into the lives of classical music’s most famous (and monstrous?) composers. In each episode host Tom Allen is joined by co-presenter Ben Gernon and a celebrity guest to hear the stories, intrigue and scandal to decide how monstrous these composers really were.
When conductor Ben Gernon tells people what he does, he’s almost always met with the same response “oh how fascinating… now tell me, what do you actually do?” It’s a universally unanswered question.
In The Silent Musician, Ben answers that question, charting a sonically rich and provocative ride through the conducting jungle, and opening our ears to the possibilities in performance that different conductors create. He unlocks the traditions and sound worlds of our best orchestras, and explores what happens to the music making when there is no conductor.
The first three months of the year have seen Ben conduct five concerts with the BBC Philharmonic, in a huge variety of repertoire, with soloists Victor Julien- Laferièrre, Martin Roscoe, Juan Pérez Floristán and Alban Gerhardt.
